Some People Really Do Hate Journalists

As if we needed more evidence. Anyone who checks the comments on news stories posted to social media knows how much vitriol is on display.

Most of us who work in news understand that the First Amendment is there more to protect UNpopular speech than popular speech, which doesn’t need much protection. But there’s a difference between free speech and responsible speech. Advocating death by hanging isn’t responsible speech.

Dan Shelly, executive director of the RTDNA, made public some of the comments he got after the RTDNA sent a letter to merchants requesting that the “Rope. Tree. Journalist.” t-shirts be removed. See the comments and Dan’s narrative here.
