While it’s never inappropriate to honor the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces, you should be aware that Memorial Day is a solemn holiday to honor those members of our armed services who have given their life in service to our nation. It is a day to honor dead veterans.
Years ago, Memorial Day was called “Decoration Day”. It was always observed on May 30th, and it was a day that Americans went to cemeteries and “decorated” the graves of those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Veteran’s Day, which is always observed November 11th, is a day to honor all those who wear or have worn the uniform of one of our nation’s armed services.
Be sure you’re aware of these distinctions, so you don’t make the mistake of writing a script that says Memorial Day is to honor all veterans.
There’s a great explanation of the difference between the two holidays here.
